The brassy yellow color of pyrite has earned it the nickname "fool's gold." However, the name pyrite is actually derived from the Greek root word "pyr" meaning "fire," alluding to the fact that sparks can be created by striking two pieces of the mineral together.

Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral. It forms at both high and low temperatures in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks worldwide, making it the most common of the sulfide minerals. The crystal pattern of pyrite is often cubic, although it has many other formations, including pyritohedral, octahedral, massive, granular, and botyoidal.

Pyrite resonates with the solar plexus chakra, helping to energize that chakra, and giving a burst of vitality to the physical body and the energy fields. It is a stone of willpower and determination, increasing confidence and aiding one in taking assertive action. As such, pyrite is an excellent stone for manifesting ideas into physical reality.
