A fossilized Ammonite spiral-shell from Morocco with Honey Calcite, Quartz and Opal-like inclusions. You can see the Calcite and Quartz inclusions in the chambers of the shell itself. The opal you like iridescent hues you will catch in beautiful fiery red hues on the rear of the shell along with some stunning icy blue streaks too are from the layers of the shell and aragonite being present which is a component of Nacre (also known as Mother of Pearl) . This nacreous shell, with its rainbow colours, is what is turned into gemstones such as Ammolite.

Gem ammonites such as this red iridescent ammonite are called biogenic gemstones (the only other gems of this type are pearl and amber) because they are formed from the fossilised organic material of once living creatures.

The distinctive colour, lustre, and opal-like effect of iridescent ammonites is caused by their Aragonite shells.

Inside the shell, there are many stacked layers of Aragonite which light must travel through when it is shone on the shell.

As light bounces back through the layers of Aragonite, a rainbow spectrum of colour can be observed due to the interplay of light travelling through the layers.

Thick layers of Aragonite typically leads to shades of red being observed, such as in this red iridescent ammonite, whilst thinner layers lead to shimmering greens, which can also sometimes be observed in red iridescent ammonites.

The thinnest layers of Aragonite lead to rare blue and violet hues being observed.

As you move an iridescent ammonite in the presence of light, you can observe the colours moving, changing, and flashing in what is known as chromatic shift.

This are best seen when a direct light is shining on the shell. You will get a lot of enjoyment finding spots of the gorgeous shimmer that you didn’t previously see as some are in more obvious places than others.

It is believed that Ammonite brings stability and order in life, and eases spiritual growth and development.

Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around the world due to their familiar spiral shape. They were marine based, present between 240 – 65 million years ago. They are the most popular fossil for collections and found all over the world. Some ammonites could reach up to 2 metres in size.

Please note: Due to being a natural hand carved stone, each crystal is unique and may differ slightly in shape, size, weight and colour. They may also contain small flaws including imperfect points, rough edges, inclusions or natural cavities.
